How to find the right personal trainer for you?

There are many personal trainers out there, and sometimes it might be difficult to discern which trainer would be the right fit for you, especially before, during, and after a knee surgery. It is important to find a trainer that is well trained in rehabilitation, because if you sign up with the wrong trainer, you could end up injuring yourself more.

Things to look for:

  • Education – Make sure your trainer has either a degree in Kinesiology, or a national certification that INCLUDES corrective exercises. Normal certifications do not cover corrective exercises, so be careful that you don’t end up choosing a trainer that does not have the proper education to guide you through the rehabilitation process. A trainer without the proper education could be more detrimental than helpful to your cause.

  • Personality – It is important that you find a trainer that fits with your personality. A personal trainer should make you feel comfortable, and should always give you exercises that are challenging, but not too hard. Having a trainer that you feel a personal connection with can be the difference between going all the way through rehabilitation, and quitting mid way.

  • Experience – Just because a trainer has the proper education doesn’t necessarily mean they have put it in practice yet.  Ask your trainer how long they have been a trainer, and how many people they have helped through a surgery, specifically the surgery you are having or had.
